How Do Ball Bearings Work?
In General
1. Ball bearings work to make something spin. They are found in many different applications, and although the ball bearing itself is just a round metal ball, the appearance of a set of bearings can look vastly different from one application to another. Some are just ball bearings rolling free in bearing cups, some are in sealed setups that look more like a donut than a bearing, and some are hidden from view altogether, such as those in a fishing pole or bicycle wheel.
The Bearing
2. A ball bearing is a round, metal ball that works in unison with other bearings of the same shape and size to allow a spinning motion. They come in many different sizes, from extremely tiny to very large. Most bicycle wheel bearings are about the size of a green pea, for reference. Ball bearings actually roll around in their enclosure, which allows the object they are in to spin. Normally, the mechanism that ball bearings roll around in is called a race.
Lubrication
3. Friction causes heat, and steel ball bearings rolling around (sometimes at a very high rate of speed) are no exception. The most common cause of ball bearing failure is heat. If the bearing set is exposed to the elements, the combination of hot and cold weather mixed with rain and dew can break down the lubrication fast. This could cause the ball bearings to rust, preventing them from spinning freely. To combat the heat monster and vastly prolong the life of the bearings and the race, lubrication is needed. Keeping a bearing set well-greased exponentially cuts down on the heat caused from friction. Different lubricants are used in different types of bearings, so be sure you use the correct grease for the application.
If you decide to grease ball bearings yourself, do not be afraid to use too much. A liberal coating of grease can only help the situation. In general, the faster the bearings go, the more their need for lubrication increases. Therefore, it is essential to coat high-speed bearings, such as those found in wheels, with quality grease. One of the best multi-purpose greases available is the Moly graphite bearing grease used on disc brakes. It repels water very well, and will not easily break down or allow heat to gum it up.

How Do Ball Bearing Turbos Work?
# Ball bearing turbochargers are small fan pumps that that are commonly found on drag racing cars. These additions to an engine convert the excess heat from the exhaust into additional energy for the motor. The increase in energy allows the car to improve speed, acceleration, and endurance.
# A ball bearing turbocharger uses the energy in the heated exhaust that is expelled by an internal combustion engine to power a small fan pump. Ball bearings support the turbine shaft of the fan, rather than the fluid bearings in other turbochargers. The fan pump works to increase the amount of air that goes through the engine, augmenting the engine's ability to provide air to the cylinders.
# In order to produce mechanical energy in an internal combustion engine, the cylinders in the engine block are filled with a precise mixture of air and fuel, which will only fire correctly if they are in the proper ratio. The mixture is ignited with a spark, and the resulting explosion propels a piston out of the end of each cylinder. When the cylinder rebounds, the suction pulls additional air into the intake manifold of the engine, to mix with more fuel and create the next explosion. The amount of fuel to be ignited in the cylinders is limited by the amount of air available.
# The ball bearing turbocharger provides additional air to this process, which increases the amount of fuel that the carburetor can insert in the cylinder. The increased amounts of fuel and air combine to result in a larger explosion, and more power for the car's engine. A careful balance must be maintained, in order to ensure that the explosion is not so large that it damages the engine. In order to maintain this balance, the speed of the turbocharger's fan is controlled by a wastegate. This device ensures that the correct amount of exhaust is used to power the fan, routing excess exhaust away in order to prevent too much power from being generated by the turbocharger.

All About Deep Groove Ball Bearings
A bearing is a device to allow constrained relative motion between two or more parts, typically rotation or linear movement. Bearings may be classified broadly according to the motions they allow and according to their principle of operation as well as by the directions of applied loads they can handle. There are many different types of bearings among which the ball bearing is rather common. They have various applications. They are commonly used in machinery industry and in wheels of vehicles like cars, buses and motorcycles. It is very important to maintain them. If the maintenance is done properly, the life span of these products will be maximized.
Among all these different categories, the deep groove ball bearing is the most common one. The basic model of this product consists of an outer ring, an inner ring, steel balls and cages.
The structure of these bearings is quite simple. It is very easy to use them. Moreover, it is a kind of product which has the largest production volume and wide range of applications. They are mainly used to bear radial load, meanwhile, they can also bear some axial load. When the radial internal clearance of bearing is enlarged, they will have features of angular contact ball bearings and they can bear larger axial load. Compared to other kinds of bearing products which have the same size with them, the deep groove ball bearings have smaller coefficient of friction and higher rotation speed. Besides, they can replace thrust ball bearings to support axial loads under very high rotation speed.
When they are installed in the shaft, they can limit the axial displacement of the shaft or housing in both directions within the axial clearance. Therefore, they can make axial positioning in two directions. Additionally, this type of product has a certain ability of aligning. Most of their cages are steel stamping ribbon cages.
The manufacturing costs of them are relatively low. In addition to basic models of deep groove ball bearings, there are still many others such as deep groove ball bearings with dust cover, or with a rubber seal ring and double row deep groove ball bearings, etc.
There are many advantages of this kind of bearing products. Firstly, they are suitable for high speed and high rotation operation. Secondly, they are very durable even without regular maintenance. Thirdly, they have small friction coefficient and low costs of manufacturing. Fourthly, they have various sizes and models which can meet different requirements.
Like many other kinds of bearing products, deep groove ball bearings also have a wide range of applications such as gearboxes, instruments, motors, pumps, household appliances, internal combustion engines, agricultural machinery, construction machinery, and engineering machinery.

Maintenance technicians at a glass fabrication plant recently witnessed first hand how high temperatures can affect and potentially damage rolling bearings. Bearings in a fan used to evacuate superheated air during the glassmaking process began to overheat. Bearing temperatures, which normally hovered around 170°F (77°C), climbed to 195°F (91°C). While the fan continued to run, plant technicians consulted with a bearing engineer to devise a solution. But their efforts came too late: by the time the meeting ended, the grease inside the bearing had dried up and smoke had begun to emanate from the bearing, causing shutdown.
Failure analysis quickly pinpointed a cause: process temperatures of 1000°F (538°C) or more produced in the glassmaking process resulted in an ambient temperature of 220°F (104°C). The plant immediately took steps to shield fan bearings mechanically from the worst of this heat. In addition, the "floating" bearing in the fan arrangement was offset in the housing, providing it with more room to travel axially to accommodate shaft expansion.
Higher-than-normal operating temperatures, whether caused by ambient conditions or generated within the bearing itself, have the potential to harm rolling bearings. Normal operating temperatures differ, depending on the application. Maintenance technicians should be aware of this and know the common causes of, and remedies for, bearing overheating.
Electric Motors
The ball bearings used in most electric motors are pre-greased, shielded ball bearings. Normal motor bearing operating temperatures range from 140°F (60°C) to 160°F (71°C).
Overheating in electric motor bearings is generally lubricant-related. For example, when relubricating open bearings, users may inadvertently employ a low-temperature grease which does not provide adequate viscosity at the normal operating temperature. Or the user may over-grease the bearing, forcing bearing balls to push through excess grease as they rotate, leading to a sharp temperature rise. Another cause of overheating is mixing incompatible greases, which can reduce the consistency of the grease and possibly the overall viscosity.
Fans
Commercial fans generally utilize ball and roller bearings mounted in cast iron or pressed steel housings. Fans are exposed to a wide variety of ambient conditions, ranging from below-zero temperatures for rooftop fans to extremely high temperatures for fans used in industrial processes.
Normal bearing operating temperatures vary, depending on the environment and application. The standard grease in most fan bearings remains effective to an operating temperature of 180°F (82°C). If steady-state operating temperatures are higher than 180°F (82°C), consider using a grease with a synthetic base oil. Viscosity in a synthetic oil does not vary as much with temperature as in a standard mineral oil, and the rate of oxidation is much slower. For operating temperatures above 200°F (93°C), a circulating oil system may be needed. These systems pump clean, cool oil through a bearing arrangement.
In hot-gas fans, special measures must be taken to protect bearings from high temperatures. In virtually all cases, an aluminum disk or flinger placed on the shaft between the bearing and the fan casing can act as a heat shield. Often, a blower wheel or compressed air can be used to direct cooling air across the bearing housing or the shaft.
Pumps
Depending on the application, normal bearing operating temperatures in pumps range from 100°F (38°C) to 180°F (82°C), with most running between 140°F (60°C) and 160°F (71°C). Although grease is used in some vertical pumps, oil is the preferred lubricant in the majority of pump applications. Standard bearing oils in pumps remain effective to approximately 180°F (82°C). If normal operating temperatures are higher than 180°F (82°C), a synthetic oil should be used; if temperatures exceed 200°F (93°C), a circulating oil system will probably be required.
As in other bearing applications, higher-than-normal operating temperatures in pumps can be caused by bearing overlubrication. Overheating can also be caused by bearing misalignment or ball skidding within the bearing. Specially designed bearings are available to eliminate ball skidding. Ideally, bearing temperatures in pumps, especially those in critical applications, should be regularly monitored.
Gear Drives
Bearings in gear drives normally operate at 160° (71°C)-180°F (82°C) and are lubricated with static oil systems. As improved technology permits reductions in the size of gear drives, there is a growing trend to transmit more power through a given size drive than ever before. This practice can cause bearings in gear drives to run hotter and may necessitate the use of alternative cooling methods.
In summary, proper bearing lubrication is the primary concern in all high-temperature applications. That concern is heightened by the trend of running industrial equipment at higher speeds than originally intended, further increasing bearing temperatures. The general rule is to provide the minimum viscosity required at the expected operating temperature: 100 SUS (20cst) for roller bearings and 70 SUS (13cst) for ball bearings. In addition, the increased thermal expansion of the shaft must be accounted for both axially (to ensure that high thrust loads are not induced) and radially (to ensure that radial internal clearance is adequate to avoid preload). The solution may also entail using a grease with a synthetic base oil or converting to a different lubricant delivery system, such as circulating oil.

ARB deals with Bearing demand in the World
Bearing demand in theWorld(including plain bearings) is projected to expand 3.0 percent per year through 2013 to $10.6 billion. The primary factors supporting advances will be a rebound in motor vehicle production levels and continued, albeit moderating, growth in aerospace equipment and machinery shipments. In addition, as the wind energy market continues to grow, suppliers will benefit from sales of high-value, large diameter wind turbine bearings. Market gains will be dampened by a deceleration in overall durable goods output asWorldcompanies continue to move manufacturing operations to offshore areas where labor costs are lower. Significant increases in average bearing life, attributable to the use of improved product designs, betterquality materials and better lubricants, will also restrain growth in aftermarket sales. However, a shift in the product mix toward more expensive, better performing products will provide a counterbalance, supported in part by high energy prices that will make highly efficient bearings a more attractive investment.
Improved quaiity, performance to boost shipments
Shipments of bearings from Worldplants are expected to expand 2.8 percent annually through 2013 to $10.0 billion, approximating domestic demand increases. Industry output will be stimulated by growth in several key domestic bearingusing industries and by rising demand in a number of export markets. Further investment inWorldbearing plants by foreign firms will contribute to production gains as well.Worldbearing manufacturers’ ongoing efforts to improve the quality and performance of their products, and to increase the efficiency of their operations, will also help spur output growth, as will a trend from selling simple components to selling more advanced, higher value added systems that incorporate bearings and associated components. However, foreign suppliers are also improving the quality of their goods, and World-based bearing companies are expected to make additional investments in overseas manufacturing facilities, limiting advances in domestic industry production.
Roller bearings to post strongest market gains
The strongest market gains through 2013 will be posted by roller bearings, benefitting from renewed strength inWorldproduction of motor vehicles and from sales of advanced, high-value products for applications such as wind turbines and heavy machinery. Demand for mounted bearings and bearing parts will also outperform bearing demand overall. Sales of bearing parts will be driven by increases in the number of bearingcontaining products (aircraft, automobiles, industrial equipment, etc.) in use and by demand for the improved performance associated with more advanced parts. Mounted bearing demand increases will be spurred by original equipment manufacturers’ (OEM) desire to simplify their production process and reduce future maintenance requirements.

ARB Bearings Announces New Turbocharger Ball Bearing Technology
The ARB Bearings CT3B turbocharger is relatively new on the scene, is dynamite in a small package and has a bearing system that utilizes the latest in ball bearing technology. Racing applications need turbochargers that accelerate at the fastest possible rate and the CT3B bearing system allows it to do just that.
The acceleration rate of a turbocharger is a function of the rotor inertia and the friction losses in the bearing system. Conventional bearing systems have floating sleeve bearings that have an inner and outer oil film fed by lube oil under pressure from the engine lubricating system. They also must employ a stationary thrust bearing that is also fed by lube oil under pressure from the engine. The friction loss attributed to a stationary thrust bearing is proportional to the fourth power of the radius and can amount to several horsepower at the high speed at which turbochargers operate. The oil films in conventional sleeve bearing systems have significant viscosity that produces appreciable friction losses due to oil film shear when the turbocharger rotor accelerated and running at high speed. The friction losses in the sleeve bearings and in the thrust bearing result in mechanical efficiencies in the middle 90% range in conventional turbochargers. There is little or no oil film shear in ball bearings which operate with rolling friction only so that the CT3B accelerates much faster than turbochargers using sleeve bearings systems.
The CT3B bearing system is a proprietary design that is unique in the industry. It utilizes full compliment, angular contact ball bearings with ceramic balls. Compared with steel balls, ceramic balls in ball bearings have a number of advantages. Bearing service life is two to five times longer. They run at lower operating temperatures and allow running speeds to be as much as 50% higher. The surface finish of ceramic balls is almost smooth, producing lower friction losses and lower vibration levels. There is less heat buildup during high speed operation, they exhibit reduced ball skidding and have a longer fatigue life. All these characteristics make ceramic ball bearings ideal for use in turbochargers where they must operate at very high speeds and survive in a high temperature environment. The Full compliment bearings do now use a cage to position the balls and this additional feature, combined with the ceramic material provides a combination that has minimal friction losses. The mechanical efficiency of the CT3B turbo can approach 99%, and this contributes to rotor acceleration rates that have been shown to be faster than competition.
The angular contact bearings are mounted in an elongated steel cylinder that is free to rotate in the bearing housing. The outside diameter of the cylinder is fed with lube oil and this outer oil film provides a cushion against shock and vibration.

Bearing Knowledge Is Power
It has often been said that knowledge is power. This is especially true in the design and servicing of power transmission systems. Utilizing the knowledge of recent advances in bearing design and manufacturing technology provides a cost-effective ability to increase power handling capability or product life in both original equipment and service replacement applications.
The term "power density" is commonly used to describe this concept of applying technology enhancements to maximize performance (life and power thruput) within a minimum space or within an existing system. For example, one manufacturer recently optimized his pinion bearing and shaft design to increase system life by 39 percent, reduce weight by 8 percent and reduce costs by 20 percent. Power density has also enabled service replacement bearings to increase life and improve system performance without modification to the existing bearing envelope or support design.
It should be understood that to effectively decrease equipment downtime, reduce regular service/replacement intervals and increase overall system life requires one to first identify the weak link of the given system's performance chain of core components, namely bearings, gears, shafts, seals, lubrication, etc. Here the design and application of "enhanced" or customized tapered roller bearings, as well as CBN ground gears, profiled gear teeth, light weight (aluminum) or high strength housings, and synthetic lubricants, can typically have a significant effect on maximizing the performance potential and power density of a power transmission system.
One major objective of higher power density is to improve service life. Achieving this objective for bearings requires minimizing fatigue damage in its three primary modes:
Minimizing Bearing Damage
* Inclusion-A fatigue crack starts just below the raceway surface at a nonmetallic inclusion (micro impurity) and propagates to the surface.
* Geometric Stress Concentration-Damage occurs in a localized region of high stress at the raceway edges due to high rolling loads and misalignment.
* Point Surface Origin-Damage originates at a localized, high-stress point on the raceway surface, typically caused by insufficient lubricant film thickness separating the bearing surfaces.
